Insurance & cover

The short version: WildGrid has no insurance or damage protection in place today, and we are not going to imply otherwise. This page explains what that means for you before you list or rent anything.

No active cover

There is no WildGrid policy, waiver or guarantee behind any rental on this site. This page is general information, not legal advice and not insurance advice.

What WildGrid covers today

  • · Nothing. WildGrid does not provide, arrange, resell or underwrite any insurance, damage waiver, protection plan or guarantee.
  • · No policy is in place that would pay an owner for damage, loss or theft, or pay a renter for injury or a ruined trip.
  • · Any wording anywhere on this site that sounds like protection is about process — messages, records, refunds of money actually collected — not about insurance.

Who carries the risk

  • · The rental is an agreement between the owner and the renter. Both carry their own risk.
  • · Owners should check whether their own homeowner, renter, business or equipment policy covers lending gear to another person for money. Many personal policies exclude it.
  • · Renters are responsible for returning gear in the condition they received it, and for their own health, travel and liability cover.
  • · Outdoor recreation carries inherent risk, including serious injury. You take part at your own risk.

The damage cover hold — what it is, and what it is not

  • · A damage cover hold is an optional second hold on the renter's card, separate from the owner's deposit. It is the renter's own money, set aside by their bank.
  • · It is not insurance. There is no policy, no carrier and no underwriter, and nothing pays out to anybody.
  • · Nothing is charged when the hold is placed. The hold is let go when the owner confirms the gear came back, or by itself once the rental has finished and the waiting period has passed.
  • · Only WildGrid staff can keep any part of it, only after damage is reported, and only with a written reason recorded against the booking. Owners cannot take any of it themselves.
  • · An open dispute stops any release until a person decides.
  • · Card holds lapse on their own after about a week at the payment provider, so a hold is not a lasting guarantee of anything.
  • · A cover hold is only offered on a booking when a standard amount has been set and switched on. Until then, no cover hold is shown or taken.

Known exclusions and limits

  • · No damage waiver, no theft cover, no loss-of-use payment, no personal accident cover, no third-party liability cover.
  • · No security deposit is being charged or held during this beta, so there is no automatic pot to draw on for damage.
  • · WildGrid does not inspect equipment in person and does not certify that any item is safe or fit for a given use.
  • · Higher-risk categories — motorised equipment, watercraft, ride-on carts, guided experiences — stay closed for booking precisely because no cover exists for them.
  • · Conditions information is drawn from public sources and is not a safety guarantee or an emergency warning service.

How damage and disputes are handled now

  • · Report it through the booking thread first so the owner and the record stay together.
  • · Serious incidents go through the incident report form; a person reads each one and replies through your WildGrid messages.
  • · Owner payouts can be held while a claim is open, so money is not released out from under an unresolved dispute.
  • · WildGrid can help the two parties communicate and keep the record. It cannot compensate either side.

What is under review

  • · An internal legal and insurance review packet has been prepared for outside counsel and a commercial insurance broker. It has not been reviewed by either yet.
  • · It covers general liability, marketplace and contingent liability, equipment and inland marine, cyber, technology errors and omissions, participant accident and excess cover, plus peer-to-peer rental exclusions and which categories are insurable at all.
  • · No category will be opened for booking, and no cover will be described here as active, until a real policy is bound and named on this page.
  • · Legal review is recommended before any meaningful paid scale.
